Report - Engine Seminar

SVMARC Melvin Krueske & Bill Rose Engine Seminar                10/9/2010

This engines seminar was very informative attending were Melvin K., Bill R., Bill A., Pat B., Jim B., & Lauren A.  I purchased a rebuilt Model B engine for my 1931 Slant window. When the engine was installed the rear engine mounts did not fit.  No problem, a quick call to Vintage Ford would solve the problem-----wrong.  They don’t carry the Float-a-Motor mounts that adapt to the B engine and the A frame.  A few measurements were taken and I could see the bell housing was to narrow by one inch and the bolt centers were to far apart.   No problem, just modify stock mounts and use the top hole as control.  All we needed to do was remove the engine and make some new mounts and we would be on the road in no time-------wrong.   I modified the mounts and reinstalled the engine with Bill A. and we could not get the engine mount bolts in the bell housing.  No problem—a quick call to the Master Mel and he certainly would get me back on the road or headed in the right track.  Mel suggested taking the engine out of the spare rolling chassis and use it as a template to make new mounts.  We removed the spare engine and attached the motor mounts and manufactured a plate with the right hole spacing.   The manufacturing was to make a template to cut additional metal that was welded to an original engine plate.  It was a great team working together to solve the problem.  When we felt the engine was in the right place the new plates were tacked to the mounts.  The engine was removed again from the 31.  The plates then received full penetration of the welds.  They were bolted into the car and with a few kind words were tightened up.  The Model B engine was installed and everything seemed to align up great!  The next day Bill A. reinstalled the spare engine back into the spare chassis all did a great job and I couldn’t have done it without everyone.   Thank You
